Social Media Use In Teens

September 13, 2017 by John Dennis 20 Comments

I’m giving a presentation next Monday to foster care and adoption social workers. The topic is Internet, Social Media and Gaming In Teens.

I’m trying to do some last minute research. Please post in the comments what apps your teens are using the most for social media, what are the dangers you’ve encountered or what are the positives you’ve seen. (Reblogs will help a great deal as well to get as much info back)

Thanks in advance! πŸ˜ƒπŸ‘πŸ»

Edit: I’ll be compiling a post on the top 5 apps parents need to be aware of and some resources to help after the conference

Thanks disha! Definitely a lot of danger in being able to connect to strangers. A lot of teens are starting to move away from FB because they view it as something for their parents

Blocking and creating ghost accounts πŸ‘» are a real issue. It’s also used a lot by gangs to recruit teens. The cyber bullying is also a very concerning issue as a number of teens recently have committed suicide over bullying and cyber bullying. Thanks for the great comments!

A lot of teens tell me about Snapchat and Whisper. Whisper is particularly alarming to me because everything is “anonymous”. Although these apps fall out of style so quickly so I don’t now if they are still in season or not.

Snapchat is probably in the top 3 most popular apps. Whisper is still out there. Thanks so much for the comment and the reblog!!

I don’t know about Whisper and will have to check that out. I’m not sure if my teen has.

Please take a moment to check out this blog and offer some suggestions for social media use in teens! This is an important topic and most of us have some experience to share about.

Definitely Snapchat. My cousin who is 16 says Facebook is not popular among him and his friends. They do use something else, but he wouldn’t tell me what it was!

Haha. Funny that he was so secretive about it. Is your cousin using this secret app for messaging?

I could assume he is. He said most people use it instead of Facebook because Facebook is now old and irrelevant to them.

This is a great discussion. My teen uses Twitter and Snapchat. My brother who is much cooler than me follows her as well as my sister. I like it this way as it’s not like mom is following her, but she is. I’m lucky she has schools who are interested in for an athletic scholarship as well as an ROTC scholarship. We’ve had long discussions about how you present yourself on social media. I hope and pray these are key in her safety. Yes I’ll reblog your post. Anything to keep teens safe!

And I meant to say she is followed on her Twitter account by these schools. That’s a positive for many reasons as she’s learning social media presentation counts towards her ability to land a scholarship. I hope that makes sense.

That’s a good way to approach it with an aunt or uncle and definitely openly talking about it. Thanks for the input, the follow and the reblog! Much appreciated πŸ˜ƒ

There are so many it is hard to keep up! I am a teacher and parent so this is always a concern. Kids have secret apps on their phones now that look like calculators but actually hide things. Snapchat is still one they use a lot AND get into trouble with. Even though they use it, they seem to not fully understand it. They truly think the picture is deleted in three seconds. The big shock with parents also comes when they are friends with their kids on Facebook, and the kid has 70 friends, only to find out later that there are two Facebook accounts, and the “real” one has over 800 friends. Kik is one to be careful of as well as kids chat to anyone. I’d never heard of Whisper so thank you to the comments for the heads up!

Yessss! Thanks for your comments. I definitely go over the hidden apps like the calculator. As well I go over Snapchat and Snapcrack. Ghost accounts as well as using Brick phones are a real problem. There are just so many apps and more everyday – Burn Note, Musical.ly, Whats App….and the list goes on. What grade do you teach? Thanks btw for following πŸ˜ƒ

What on earth is Snapcrack???? Sounds like a swift drug delivery service!! Oh my goodness technology it is frightening. I remember when you had to put your photos in to be developed, and they wouldn’t develop anything they thought was inappropriate! I am a high school teacher. In Australia that means we teach years 7 – 12. All grades all year πŸ™‚

Yeah, tell me about it. And that’s just the internet that we know about. The DarkWeb is where the truly horrific stuff is. Snapcrack is a Snapchat mirroring app. It allows you to open Snapchats in Snapcrack, take screenshots and the original sender has no clue. https://casperapk.com/snapcrack/
